The Peoples Democratic Party has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to resign his position as the country’s head over worsening insecurity and general incompetence.

In a statement signed by Sanya Atofarati, the party’s South-West publicity secretary, and made available to Peoples Gazette on Sunday, the PDP said Nigerians and the international community should impress the need to quit office upon Mr Buhari.

“It has now become imperative for every right-thinking citizen of the country (Nigeria), regardless of religion or political affiliation, to compel the President not only to tender his resignation but to as well apologise to Nigerians for his gross incompetence since he deceptively took over power in 2015 repeating same in a rigged re-election in 2019 knowing fully well that he lacks the capability and capacity to manage the country,” Mr Atofarati posited.

“It is equally morally expedient for him (Buhari) to resign as a mark of honour and save the country from the precipice,” he added.

Mr Atofarati’s release comes on the heels of heightened bandit attacks that have persisted around the country for years and have now advanced towards the nation’s capital, Abuja.

The PDP spokesman said Nigerians can no longer wait for Mr Buhari to complete his term in 2023.

He lamented the growing rate of insurgency ravaging the country, particularly the threat by terrorists to unleash mayhem in some parts of the country.

“The once most prosperous nation in Africa has become a laughing stock and a shadow of herself under the watch of the APC-led Buhari administration,” Mr Atofarati bemoaned.

Touching on the economy, Mr Atofarati advised the president to apologise to Nigeria for depleting the “terrible nightmare”, especially with its economy depleting further under the present regime while advising Mr Buhari to apologise to Nigerians.

While asking the international communities to urgently rescue the country from the Buhari regime, the main opposition party explained that the country has never had it worse in its 62 years of existence, as a sovereign nation.

The party said it was time for Mr Buhari to admit his failure in ruining the country and her economic resources.

“How do we explain that Nigeria has now lost her territorial integrity to insurgents under the clueless Government of President Mohamadu Buhari?

“It is now an open secret that the APC-led administration is a ruse and a colossal failure,” Mr Atofarati’s statement read in part.

The country has swam under economic doldrums during Mr Buhari’s outgoing tenure, twice falling into recession. The naira has continued to lose value against the dollar as the country’s Forex woes compound and unemployment figures reach all time highs.

Inherited Book Haram insurgency has not abated but insecurity has metamorphosed into banditry and spread across the North from its North-East stronghold.

Last week, the terrorists had threatened to abduct President Buhari following the refusal of his regime to negotiate the release of armed fighters in the government prison facilities with the violent group.

The terrorists have also taken their battle to the seat of power, in Abuja, with the recent deadly attack on medium correctional centre (Kuje prison) and release of prisoners from detention, and more worrisome was the latest on soldiers of the 7 Guards Battalion of the Nigerian Army Presidential Guards Brigade forcing the Nigerian government to shut down majors schools.

The ravaging insecurity, particularly under the watch of the Buhari regime, has also created internal refugees within the country.
