TOPIC: What Influences You? [Open Heaven for Teens 28 October 2022]

MEMORISE: Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Colossians 3:16

READ: 1 John 2:14-17

  1. I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
  2. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
  3. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
  4. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 2 Timothy 2:1-26, Jeremiah 23-24

MESSAGE:

As a teenager, you are exposed to influence from your peers. You see your classmates doing certain things and you just want to do it so you don’t look odd or different. Sometimes, what your classmates do does not even make sense, yet you feel like copying it. For instance, there was a time that young boys went about in brightly coloured socks and palm slippers. There was a time getting a tattoo was in vogue.

My child, you need to understand that your model is Jesus and though you cannot see Him face to face, you can see Him through His word. During His earthly ministry, in spite of all that the Pharisees did, He never fell. Each time He did something good such as when He healed someone on a Sabbath day, they objected to it. He never argued with them nor agreed to their objections but in wisdom, He was always quick to answer and enlighten them through the word. The Bible says you are not of this world even though you are living in it, so rather than allow the world to influence you, you should be the one influencing it.

KEY POINT:

Let the word influence your decisions and actions from today.

HYMN: I Am Thine O Lord

  1. I am Thine, O Lord,
    I have heard Thy voice,
    And it told Thy love to me;
    But I long to rise
    in the arms of faith
    And be closer drawn to Thee.

CHORUS
Draw me nearer,
nearer blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer,
nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.

  1. Consecrate me now to
    Thy service, Lord,
    By the pow’r of grace divine;
    Let my soul look up
    with a steadfast hope,
    And my will be lost in Thine.
  2. Oh, the pure delight
    of a single hour
    That before Thy throne I spend,
    When I kneel in prayer,
    and with Thee, my God
    I commune as friend with friend!
  3. There are depths of love
    that I cannot know
    Till I cross the narrow sea;
    There are heights of joy
    that I may not reach
    Till I rest in peace with Thee.
