TOPIC: Deception In Physical Appearance
BIBLE TEXT: Genesis 27:15,16,22 – “Then Rebekah took the best clothes of Esau her older son, which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins. Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”
Deception does not only manifest itself in communication as examined in the last lesson, it equally manifests in physical appearance. Many deceivers, like chameleons, change colors in order to deceive their targeted victims. The story of Jacob and Esau recorded in Genesis 27 is a classical example. To get Esau’s blessings, Jacob altered his appearance. He dressed like Esau, putting on the best of Esau’s clothes and covering his hands and the smooth part of his neck with goatskins. In verse 23, the Bible records that when Isaac touched Jacob, he could not recognize him because his hands were hairy like those of his brother, Esau. That was how Jacob deceitfully and successfully hijacked his brother’s blessings.
Deception in physical appearance manifests in different ways. The first is mimicry. This is a close imitation of another person or another thing. It happens when a deceiver deliberately dresses, acts or behaves like another person to prey on his victim. Ladies who borrow garments and attires from their friends to attend parties and functions fall into this category. Guys who borrow flashy cars to attract and deceive young ladies equally fall into this category.
Another form of deception under this category is fabrication. This happens when fake materials are fabricated and presented as the original to deceive innocent and unsuspecting victims. You can begin to imagine how fake products flood our markets today! It appears to me that in today’s world, there is absolutely nothing that people cannot fake. If people can fake pregnancy, what else can they not fake!
Distraction is another form of deception in physical appearance. It has to do with drawing someone’s attention from the truth by offering a bait or something tempting to divert their attention away from the object being concealed. Other types of deception in this category include deception by camouflage and deception by disguise as in the case of Jacob the supplanter.
Beloved of God, the counsel remains the same. Beware of deception. Do not deceive and do not be deceived. Always remember the law of karma: whatever you sow you shall reap.
I pray for you today:
So shall it be in Jesus name. Amen.
Have a wonderful day.
