Oby Ezekwesili was born on the 28th of April, 1963 in Lagos State, Nigeria. Being born as the first of six children, was very close to her parents. Due to the Nigerian civil war that begun on July 1967, Oby was forced to relocate with her family to their state of origin, Anambra. They however returned back to Lagos immediately after the war.

Oby Ezekwesili had her early primary education at African One Primary School, Ajegunle, before proceeding to United Christian College, Apapa for her secondary education. AFter obtaining her SSCE, she proceeded to the University of Lagos where obtained an M. A in International Law and Diplomacy. She also has an M.A in Public Policy and Administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Career

Prior to her return to Nigeria, Ezekwesili was working with Professor Jeffrey Sachs at the Center for International Development at Harvard.

In Nigeria, she started off in the Olusegun Obasanjo administration as the Pioneer head of the Budget Monitoring and Price Intelligence Unit (aka Due Process Unit). During Ezekwesili’s six and a half years stint in government, she was the architect of the Bureau for Public Procurement legislation, the NEITI legislation and the new Minerals and Mining legislation.

In June 2005, Ezekwesili was appointed Minister of Solid Minerals (Mines and Steel). During the period she served as the Minister of Solid Minerals, she led a vibrant reform program that led to Nigeria’s global recognition as a credible mining investment destination.

In June 2006, Ezekwesili was appointed the Federal Minister of Education, a position she held until her appointment by World Bank as the Vice-President for the Africa Region in May 2007.

On October 1, 2012, Bharti Airtel named Oby Ezekwesili as a director on its board. Bharti Airtel (also known as Airtel) is an Indian global telecommunications services company based in New Delhi, India. It operates in 18 countries across Africa, South Asia, and also in the Channel Islands.

Ezekwesili was a co-founder of Transparency International and served as one of its pioneer directors. She is also on the boards of the School of Public Policy of Central European University, The Center for Global Leadership @ Tufts University, New African magazine, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), The Harold Hartog School of Government and Policy.

Oby Ezekwesili is married to Pastor Chinedu Ezekwesili and they have two children, Chine and Chuba Ezekwesili. She is a devoted Christian and member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, a church in which her husband pastors.

Awards and Recognition

In May 2012, Oby Ezekwesili was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science (DSC) degree by the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta in Nigeria.
In 2013 and 2014, she was selected by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) as one of the BBC’s 100 Women.
Due to her efforts on the #BringBackOurGirls campaign on social media, Ezekwesili won Forbes Woman Africa Social Influencer award in 2019.
In 2006, she was honoured with a national award – Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
