She was in her first year of college when she won the Pan American U20 Championship in 2019. Mu won the Indoor Track and Field Championship in the USA the same year, running the 600 meters in 1:23.57. 
She became professional this year after agreeing to a $750,000 contract with Nike. She established new global U20 records in the 400 and 800 meters and an indoor collegiate record to start her professional career.
Following her victory in the 800m, Mu teamed up with Allyson Felix, Sydney McLaughlin, and Dalilah Muhammad to capture another gold for the USA in the 4x400m relay.

At 19, Mu broke a continental under-20 record and a national record set by Ajeé Wilson in 2017.
She earned her second gold medal. She is the first American woman to win the 800m world championship 2022.
