Marcus Rashford has admitted the World Cup defeat to France was painful and that he is glad to be going straight back to club football to take his mind off it.

England showed great promise at this World Cup, but their campaign ended in disappointment with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of France in the quarter-finals.

That defeat was made all the more painful by the fact that Gareth Southgate’s side were the better team for the majority of the match and could have taken the game to extra time at the very least if Harry Kane hadn’t missed a penalty.

Rashford admits the quarter-final exit was hard to swallow, but that already returning to action for Manchester United and scoring has eased the pain.

“It was good to come back,” he said after scoring against Burnley in a 2-0 win.

“It was a tough game and good to get a win to take into the next one. It’s more emotions-wise because it was such a disappointing feeling to be knocked out and you have to pick yourself up.

“There’s no time to feel sorry for yourself. You need to pick up results and thankfully we did that today. It was fun to be out there.”

Erik ten Hag made it clear that he intends to take the Carabao Cup seriously this season, fielding a strong starting XI for the Burnley match. Rashford has expressed his approval at his manager’s approach, feeling that winning the competition could give the team a boost for the end of the season.

“We’re in every tournament to try and win it. This is definitely a good one to win,” he stated.

“Winning this trophy early in the season in February can push you on to achieve more in the season.”

When the failure of a manager wokegate actually gets rewarded for failure, the players tend to not take failure seriously as well.
