Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has provided a cryptic update on Alejandro Garnacho’s fitness.

The young winger has missed the last few weeks with an ankle problem picked up in the Red Devils’ 0-0 draw with Southampton prior to the international break. He had been due to make his senior Argentina debut but had to withdraw from the squad.

United are heading into a gruelling stretch of the season and are still competing on three fronts. They are set to welcome back the likes of Christian Eriksen from injury and Casemiro from suspension to help with their efforts.

Ahead of the visit of Everton on Saturday afternoon, Ten Hag was asked when Garnacho might be able to return to the fold.

“We have something in our heads, but I don’t want [to reveal it] – he will definitely be back before the end of the season,” Ten Hag replied.

“I think he will be in the final stages, but I don’t want to bring so much pressure on the medical and Garnacho to set a date when to be back.”

Ten Hag seems confident that Garnacho will make a recovery before the season finishes, but there is a possibility that he could be jetting off as soon as he makes a comeback.

Argentina are bidding to hold the FIFA Under-20 World Cup this summer after Indonesia were stripped of their hosting rights at the last minute.

La Albiceleste had not qualified for the tournament, but would be awarded a route into the finals as hosts if FIFA select Argentina as the new destination for the competition.

The finals kick off on May 20, and there’s a chance that Garnacho could be called back into Argentina’s U20 setup for the tournament if they are instated.
