New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is expected to give a strong hint as to his potential starting lineup in his Premier League debut when his Red Devils face Spanish power Atletico Madrid in the final weekend of preseason friendlies before the season kickoff.
The match will be played on the neutral ground of the Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo, Norway, and it pits Man United against the team that eliminated them in last season’s Champions League round of 16. Wantaway star forward Cristiano Ronaldo is not part of the 21-man squad, announcing on social media that he will play with the Man United reserves who will take on another Spanish foe, Rayo Vallecano, on Sunday at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag will hope to continue his positive start at the helm, going unbeaten so far in four preseason matches, including wins over Liverpool, Crystal Palace, and Melbourne Victory. The lineup he fields against Atletico is expected to be the same that will navigate a tricky Premier League opener against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, Aug. 7.
Atletico Madrid are further behind in their preparations with their first competitive match not coming until Aug. 15 at Getafe. Diego Simeone’s men have only played one preseason friendly to date, a 4-0 win over third-tier side Numancia.
