The COVID-19 crisis is here, and as at the time of publishing this article, no cure has been found for it yet.
Businesses are closing down, schools and churches have closed down and even the banks, and what have we left?
People might be running out of cash anytime soon, and of course, food. How then will you survive the period of crisis and continue with your regular life after that?
Well, personally, I am not affected so much, thanks to my broad ranges of well paying internet based ‘hobbies’.
I call them hobbies because they are things I love doing. If I wasn’t a blogger, I would have been telling stories on Facebook and Twitter and of course, I have always been getting the likes and comments… haha!
Where can we even convert that to cash?
Okay, we didn’t come to discuss Facebook likes and reactions here. Do you know that you can make a living for yourself writing online?
I mean, there are tons of clients out there who are ready to pay you, not as a Nigerian scammer but as a writer, and you can earn $5 for each 500 words article you write and even more.
Infact, there is a website that pays $100 for each article you write for them, and you can write about almost anything you like, no one gives you a topic.
We’d talk about that later, keep on reading!
What are the things you need to become a freelance writer?
You do not need so many things, I’d be listening out a few of them below:
• You need to be very good in English Language
Most of these clients always look for freelance writers from native English speaking countries such as US, Canada and UK so as to get the best services for their money.
Many of them would pay you on contract basis, and you can be making above ₦30,000 for articles you will complete in five days.
I am a pretty good writer, and so I do not waste much time before delivering and that is a skill every freelance writer should possess.
• A laptop or good mobile phone with internet access
You cannot enjoy freelance writing on mobile phone, except you are really good at it. I have a friend who has a laptop but rarely uses it, all his typing jobs are done on phone and I wonder how he manages to do that… haha!
Anything you chose to use for your freelance writing, make sure it gives you enough writing comfort so you don’t loose your clients because of late writing.
• An account for receiving your payments
90% of the clients I have worked for all paid via PayPal, and it is by far the most used payment gateway.
To succeed as a freelance writer or doing any other internet business, you need to have an account. However, Nigerians are not allowed to use PayPal yet, but don’t worry, there’s a solution.

How To Earn A Living From Freelance Writing
To earn a living from freelance writing as a Nigerian during the Coronavirus crisis, you need to do a few things.
The first step is to:
• Find a website(s) to write for
There are so many websites you can write for, and make a living online. It depends on the niche you want to work with.
It could be beauty, food, internet marketing, web development or anything, there are countless websites out there.
We had earlier published an ebook on freelance writing, and there are more than 300 carefully selected websites that pay writers heavily.
The website I talked about that pays $100 straight per article is also in it, and you can get ₦500 off the ebook by using the coupon code ‘iga500‘.
Highlight, copy the coupon code and head over to check out the ebook. Apply the code at checkout and get the discount for your box of chocolates.
• Pitch the website
A pitch is a simple email you’d sent the management of the website showing your interest in writing for them.
It is something like,
My name is Dominion Chukwudi. I have been (bla bla bla). I’m interested in writing for you and I can provide a minimum of (insert number) articles per week.
I have been a professional freelance writer since 2017 and have written for many top sites including (no one verifies them, so do a quick Google search, get some articles to add).
You can check out my sample articles on or, you can reply me for samples.
I look forward to hearing from you.
After pitching the websites, wait a little, some take up to 72 hours to reply and you can begin to write immediately.
They will also tell you their payment plans and it could be immediately, weekly or monthly, I put more than 300 of such sites in the ebook.
• Find a website to be rewriting
Now, you have been approved and what is next? Assuming you signed in for health, you can pin websites like HealthLine, WebMD, MedlinePlus and Everyday Health.
If you signed up for automobile related articles, there are also tons of them and so on. A quick Google search will help you even if you are a complete novice.
• Start writing
Having pitched and gotten a few websites, it’s time to begin your career. Make sure you deliver as agreed, it will give you an edge over people who have been in the industry for a long time.
Payment is normally via PayPal.
What If The Website Pitching Job Is Too Complex For You?
It really isn’t, I have already given you a template above.
However, if you still do not want to be doing that, I shared over 20 Facebook groups and 10 Twitter handles from where you can get regular jobs on this page.
One of the Facebook groups gave me a writing contract of worth a few hundred thousand Naira, and yes, it is the best I ever got from a single job.
Writing is very lucrative, especially when you take it beyond a hobby. Have you been writing? How lucrative has it been?
