How to inprove your Vocabulary

“The more words you know, more clearly and powerfully you will think…and the more ideas you will invite into your mind.” -Wilfred Funk

It is not an unknown fact that vocabulary serves as one of the most critical skills required for building a language. Whenever you plan on learning a new language just by yourself or either through a course, particular emphasis has always been given on vocabulary.

Ever wondered why? It is because thesaurus is the foundation of the development of all the other skills-listening, reading, writing, speaking, and pronunciation; essential for mastering any language. You would notice that while talking to someone in a language other than your native, people who have good command on their expression in terms of fluency, pronunciation as well as vocabulary often leave an impression on us.

Well, only because of our perception of how attractive another language seems, grounded by our own cultures and linguistic backgrounds, along with our relationship with the region where that particular language is spoken.

Over the years, many philosophers and linguists have stated that no language is relatively lesser or more attractive than any other language, even if it might seem so. From a psychological aspect, vocabulary size has been linked with the enhancement of general cognitive ability. ‘Chunking’ was the process named by psychologist George A. Miller, who explained how words are sufficient chunking devices and how a large vocabulary acts as a powerful coping device which enhances one’s general cognitive ability.

As wordunscramblerz.net reports, the more the number of words we know, the more we can interpret ideas from others and express our ideas accurately and concisely. Rich vocabulary helps us to communicate more engagingly. Whether in personal or professional life, the power of words helps us in convincing others clearly and logically and get things done. It boasts one’s confidence and personality.

However, simpler words help in better understanding. So, we should not brag about our knowledge of concepts by using big and fancy words. Still, we should use it more smartly, i.e., conversing in the simplest way possible by using suitable and straightforward words to demonstrate what we know adequately and understand to others.

The only idea of improving vocabulary is for the proper insight into the content. Also, an adequate choice of words is essential if we want the other person to perceive the information accurately. The choice of words should be dependent upon the targeted audience. For example,- Choice of words would differ if we are interacting with a non-specialist and a company professional.

Voice Modulation

Voice modulation plays an essential role in communication. Along with the correct choice of words, people should also learn how to use voice modulation wherever necessary, i.e., change loudness, pitch, tone, and inflection of the voice to create a particular effect; otherwise, they will sound flat. Also, it helps in the delivery of the thoughts in the correct context. We should avoid the use of jargon because it might cause misunderstanding or alienation, even if your only readers are specialists.

Colloquial Vocabulary

Colloquial vocabulary should not be used in formal writing or professional communication. However, the use of idioms while conversing makes the conversation less monotonous. For example- ‘The best of both worlds’ which can be used in a sentence as: “By working part-time and looking after her kids two days a week she managed to get the best of both worlds.” Knowledge of converse homophones is also crucial for efficient communication so that the correct word is used at the proper place, for example, Complement-Compliment, Censor-Censure-Sensor, etc.

Read And Develop

“Vocabulary development is about exposure and our ability to manipulate and use language. The more we use it and develop it, the greater is our vocabulary.”- McKnight

Vocabulary can be improved by developing reading habits. People should read every day and search for the meaning of all the new words that pass. Just learning the purpose is not enough, so people should try to understand the various contexts (putting words in sentences) in which different names can be used and then establishing connections between the words with similar meanings because words with the same meaning when grouped are easier to remember.

Use Dictonary

Keeping a handy dictionary is also an excellent option to immediately search for the newly encountered name. Engaging in writing can also be a way of improving one’s vocabulary since, in writing, the writer has to clearly describe their thoughts in a way that would allow their user to be in a position to conjure what they are conveying.

Also, listening to various educational videos, for example- TEDx talks videos where multiple speakers from different backgrounds come and speak about their experiences, is very helpful in improving vocabulary and also their way of speaking and effectively delivering thoughts.

Therefore to sound smart, it is essential to improve vocabulary, the correct use of words along with their pronunciation and efficient way of delivering our thoughts and ideas!
