Jigawa State Government says it is losing over one hundred million Naira, (100m) annually as a result of the vandalization of water facilities across the State.
State commissioner for water resources, Hon. Ibrahim Garba Hannun Giwa disclosed this during a media engagement forum organized by correspondents’ chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Jigawa State chapter, held at Manpower Development Institute, Dutse.
He said from the inception of the present administration under the leadership of Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, the State Government had spent over N22bn for the provision of clean water across the State.
“During the period, we have converted over 284 motorized water schemes to solar power, while 437 new solar water schemes were constructed.
“4,472 boreholes were also constructed across the State, while urban water schemes were upgraded.
“We are proud to have achieved 92 percent provision of water to our populace as rated by UNICEF,”
The commissioner expressed worries over stealing and vandalization of the water facilities, thereby causing hardship to the citizens and sabotaging Government efforts to provide water for all.
“Last year alone, over 163 submersible pumps, solar panels and batteries were stolen,”
He also advised the general public to always take full ownership of all the government facilities in their communities and report any suspicious movement to the security agencies.
