The Red Devils won their first trophy under new manager Erik ten Hag on Sunday evening, besting Newcastle 2-0 in the final at Wembley Stadium thanks to goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford.

When asked about Man Utd’s win in his press conference ahead of City’s FA Cup clash with Bristol City, Guardiola suggested that it shouldn’t be a surprise that United are backing to winning trophies when considering the money they’ve spent on players.

“Congratulations to United. Sooner or later it should happen, shouldn’t it?” Guardiola said.

When asked about Man Utd becoming challengers for other trophies – namely the Premier League – Guardiola sarcastically replied: “If they spend a little more money, yes, because they didn’t spend, isn’t it? They’re in the position they normally should be.”

“It’s normal that United has to be there. When I landed here, I thought United would always be there, for the history, for everything, and Erik is doing an incredible job. And the players – you see how committed they are, how all together they try to do it.”

Man Utd are currently third in the Premier League table, six points behind Man City in second place but with a game in hand over their crosstown rivals.
