Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag has said that they were lucky that Brentford failed to capitalise on David De Gea’s mistake in their Premier League clash on Wednesday.

He also praised the Spanish goalkeeper for his key save on the night, though he also made a huge error that nearly cost his side.

It was a lone strike from Marcus Rashford that separated both sides at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, but the result would have been very different if not for De Gea.

The best and the worst of De Gea was on display in the second-half of the game as the Spanard attempted a long goal-kick only for Brentford striker Ivan Toney to rush him, with the ball nearly rebounding off the Brentford striker and into the back of the net.

He later made amends, denying Kevin Schade’s close range effort that would have given the visitors the equaliser and put a dent in United’s top four hopes.

Ten Hag told BBC Sport after the game, “When you need David, he is there and when you lose focus, mistakes can happen.

“We want to play as a machine and not make mistakes. We made one mistake and luckily they didn’t benefit from it and also it was the performance from David de Gea.”
