The Senegal stopper lost his place in the Blues’ starting lineup to Kepa Arrizabalaga earlier this season, while he has battled with a shoulder problem for part of the campaign.

And Mendy is now set for a further spell on the sidelines after succumbing to a fractured finger during a training session at Cobham.

A statement from Chelsea read: “Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has undergone an operation on a fractured finger sustained in training this week. The 30-year-old will work closely with the club’s medical department during his rehabilitation phase.”

Mendy started Chelsea’s first six games this season before being replaced between the sticks by Kepa, who has improved this campaign but was notably at fault for Riyad Mahrez’s winner in Thursday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Manchester City.

The 30-year-old joins a long list of players on the Chelsea treatment table, with Armando Broja, Ben Chilwell, Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount, N’Golo Kante, Raheem Steling, Reece James, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Wesley Fofana all currently unavailable.
