Champions League winners Real Madrid take on Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt in Helsinki and history suggests the first piece of European silverware available this season is heading to Spain.
Eight of the last nine UEFA Super Cup winners have been the previous season’s Champions League winners, and since 2009 only Atletico Madrid has won the Europa League and then gone on to claim the title – a feat they have managed on three occasions.
Frankfurt does have a slight advantage in the fact they have already played two competitive games this season, whereas this is Real’s first serious fixture, but the German club were thrashed 6-1 at home by Bayern Munich in their Bundesliga opener at the weekend and they could be set for a difficult night on Wednesday in the Finnish capital.

Each of the last four Super Cup finals has required extra time and two of those have been decided on spot kicks. However, Real were the last team to win in 90 minutes and the Spanish giants are in fact the only side to have won in normal time since 2014, having done so twice in two of their four appearances during that time – winning the title on three occasions.
Frankfurt may well have held something back against Bayern with one eye on this game but the manner of that defeat remains concerning. Los Blancos were last in action in a 2-0 friendly win over Juve, and they should be able to overcome the Bundesliga side in normal time on Wednesday.
Real are a fairly short price to win so for a bit more value a victory for the Spanish and European champions with both teams to score stands out. There have been goals at both ends in each of the last seven Super Cup games, and as it is Los Blancos’ season opener they may be a bit more susceptible to errors at the back.
Frankfurt found a way through against Bayern and Die Adler has scored in both of their games this season. They also scored in all of their Europa League games last term – including both legs of their knockout ties against La Liga opposition in the shape of Real Betis and Barcelona – so they can find a way through against Madrid.
Karim Benzema starred for Real in the Champions League last term with 15 goals in 12 games and the Frenchman will be looking to hit the ground running with an effort against Frankfurt in Helsinki.
Benzema didn’t score in the Champions League final but did see a strike chalked off due to a questionable offside call, despite VAR, and he looks a strong option for an anytime effort. Our prediction is a win for Real Madrid.
