Thread: Mandy Moore & Kumail Nanjiani to Lead Blumhouse’s Insidious Spin-off

According to Deadline, Blumhouse and Screen Gems are developing a new installment in the blockbuster Insidious horror franchise. Entitled Thread: An Insidious Tale, This is Us alum Mandy Moore and Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani are attached for the spin-off’s lead roles.

The project comes ahead of the upcoming theatrical release of Patrick Wilson’s Insidious: The Red Door on July 7, which will shift the story back to the Lambert family.

Thread will be directed and written by Moon Knight creator Jeremy Slater, with James Wan serving as a producer through his Atomic Monster banner. The horror spin-off will feature Nanjiani and Moore as a married couple, “who enlist the help of a spell to travel back in time, such that they can prevent the death of their young daughter. The consequences, of course, prove to be severe.”

What is Insidious: The Red Door about?

Fans last saw the Lambert Family in 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2, where Josh and Dalton suppress their memories in order to prevent them from Astral projecting and going into The Further ever again. The new film will pick up a decade after the events of Chapter 2, with Dalton heading off to college and coming to grips with his astral projection abilities as well as growing up.

The fifth installment features the return of Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring films) and Ty Simpkins (Iron Man 3) as they reprise their respective roles of Josh and Dalton. Insidious 5 is directed by Wilson from a script written by Scott Teems (Halloween Kills); it’s based on a story from Leigh Whannell and Jason Blum. It will be produced by Blum, Whannell, Wan, and Oren Peli.

The franchise first began with 2011’s Insidious, which was directed by James Wan. It was a major success, earning generally positive reviews from critics and audiences and scaring up just under $100 million at the box office. Its success not only helped revive Wan and writer Leigh Whannell’s careers, but also took Blumhouse Productions to new heights.
