Howard Webb is set to become the head of Premier League referees when Mike Riley steps down from the role next season.

Premier League clubs are pushing for a change in command, as they feel too many mistakes were made during fixtures in the 2021/2022 season.

In a statement from the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL), it has now been confirmed that Riley will leave his role next season.

Riley has held the position since 2009 when he replaced Keith Hackett.

His role is set to be split after his departure.

The PGMOL are looking to appoint a chief refereeing officer, in charge of developing match officials and a chief operating officer, who will manage the organisation.

According to the Daily Mail, Webb was in London this week holding meetings with the PGMOL and will likely to step into the role at the end of the year.

Webb, who took charge of the 2010 World Cup final, is under contract until January with Major Soccer League (MLS).
