– Group backs Obaseki’s defection to PDP, berates APC
Chairman of the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC), Anslem Ojezua, and his supporters have boycotted the party’s governorship primary, describing it as an exercise in futility.
Ojezua told The Guardian that the exercise was under litigation, insisting that the other faction merely printed fake membership cards and distributed to the people to hoodwink the world as though the few persons mobilised for the exercise were authentic APC members.
He insisted that the exercise was futile and those who supervised it merely wasted their time because the person who inaugurated the committee was not the party’s Acting National Chairman.
He maintained that Victor Giadom remained the National Chairman of APC and should direct its affairs including the conduct of primaries instead of Ntufam Hilliard Etta, who he described as an impostor.
Ojezua cautioned that if APC was not careful, the fate that befell it in Rivers and Zamfara states might become its lot in Edo State and blamed former National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, for orchestrating the crises and confusion in the party.
He pointed out that the only way to avert the looming disaster was to abide by its own rules.
Meanwhile, the Edo Unity League (EUL) has said that Governor Godwin Obaseki’s decision to defect from the APC to PDP was a step in the right direction.
In a statement issued in Benin City, its Director, Diaspora Relations Office, Deacon Henry Olovba, noted that Governor Obaseki left the APC because he needed a second term for specific reasons.
He explained that the major reason for his defection was to consolidate on the development strides he started and to ensure that treasury looters were not allowed to plunder the Edo common patrimony.
The group added that a major setback in Edo State and Nigeria was lack of continuity, adding, “These are some of the reasons the people want him back. It is evident from reactions across the state that Obaseki is the real deal for Edo and his insistence on a second term has been a political nightmare for the treasury hawks.
“The political realities in APC manifested when the rot in its leadership where one man plays God was exposed. A decent person should not be seen in a group like that.
“Governor Obaseki brought APC to its knee because he was an asset to the party. APC has degenerated into a playground for charlatans within a few days of his exit. His defection to the PDP is APC’s loss,” Olovba added.
