Baba Gana Kingibe was born on the 25th of June, 1945 into the family of Mustafa Shuwa and Ya Kingi Mallam. He grew up and had his early primary education in city of Maiduguri. In 1958, he was admitted into the Borno Provincial Secondary School.
In 1960, Baba Gana Kingibe travelled to London after getting a government scholarship to complete his O’Level and A-level at Bishop’s Stortford College. After obtaining his O’Level, he gained admission to study the prestigious University of Sussex where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations.
On his return to Nigeria in 1965, Baba Gana Kingibe started working as a Research and Planning Officer at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria but he soon left the college to become the head of Features and Current Affairs at the Broadcasting Corporation of Northern Nigeria.
In 1972, he started working as a senior political counsellor after joining the Nigerian Foreign Service. He was later promoted to the position of the head of the political desk.
In the late 1970s, Baba Gana Kingibe worked in the political department as principal secretary during the Obasanjo administration and was active in the government’s return to civil rule programme. He was also involved in the creation of states/adjustment of boundaries, local government reforms and the constitutional drafting committee.
During the Shehu Shagari administration in 1981, Babagana Kingibe was appointed the Nigerian ambassador to Greece and later the country’s representative in Pakistan.
Baba Gana Kingibe entered Nigerian political scene during the beginning of the Third Nigerian Republic. In 1988, he was made director of organisation of the People’s Front of Nigeria. The organisation which was then led by Shehu Musa Yar’Adua consisted of politicians such as Bola Tinubu, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Atiku Abubakar and Abdullahi Aliyu Sumaila.
After the PFN joined the Social Democratic Party in 1989, Kingibe was sponsored by the People’s Front faction of SDP as the party’s chairman during the conduct of elections for national executive positions and he won.
While serving as SDP chairman, Kingibe was involved in the organisation of party’s gubernatorial and presidential primaries in 1991 and 1992 respectively.
During the Abacha administration, Kingibe also served in different ministerial positions including; Minister of Foreign Affairs (1993 to 1995), Minister of Internal Affairs (1995 to 1997), and Minister of Power and Steel (1997 to 1998).
In 2007, he was appointed Secretary to the Government of the Federation, but later removed from office on September 8, 2008 by the then President Umaru Yar’Adua.
In April 2020, Babagana Kingibe was reportedly appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the as new Chief of Staff following the death of the former, Abba Khari after contacting the ravaging COVID-19.
