The police officer, who found the bodies of Nigeria’s first prime minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and his minister of finance Festus Okotie Eboh after their assassinations in 1966, has died.
According to a source, Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmed Babankowa died in the early hours of Saturday at the age of 74. A devout Muslim, he will be buried in his village, Ringim, Jigawa State today.
A former police commissioner of the old Gongola State, he served in the Nigerian Police Force, starting in the First Republic until he retired in the 80s.
Upon his retirement, he ventured into politics and aspired to become governor of Kano State on the platform of National Republican Convention (NRC) in 1991.
Like Sule Lamido, who was then the top contender in Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kano State, Babankowa too was leading member of the NRC.
