A Lecturer and Researcher, Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt City, Dr. Ikechi Kelechi Agbugba has said that the only way Nigerians can have improved quality of life is when its Agricultural policy framework and actions is geared towards poverty Alleviation.

Dr. Ikechi .K. Agbugba who doubled as the Senior Research Fellow, Africa Agriculture Agenda (AAA) spoke to our Reporter today in a telephone conversation stated that poverty Alleviation entails poverty reduction in the entire sub- sectors with structural transformation aimed at socio-economic development of the country.

He noted that the answers to the numerous questions on improved Agricultural policies which is the cardinal points of the challenges and prospects of Agribusiness management towards poverty Alleviation as contained in one of his research works on Nigeria’s Agriculture Sector Policies.

     

The Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Agricultural Economics and extension, University of Fort Hare stated further that for improved Agricultural policies to be effective in Nigeria, Government must overcome the challenges of undue Political interference, lack of adequate skills, weak institutional support on the sector, and ensure full implementation of 2004 guidelines on Nigeria Agricultural policy objectives.

The World renown Agricultural Economist opined that Nigerian Government should concentrate on domesticating the various guidelines, framework and policing of its Agric Ministry’s production of exportable commodities to promote the Country’s comparative cost advantage and foreign exchange abroad.

The University Don maintained that the policy gesture if well implemented will in no doubt promote increased production, storage and distribution, integrated Development, employment opportunities, favourable balance of payments and promote foreign exchange earnings.
