Steve Bruce claimed his first win as Newcastle manager on Sunday afternoon as £40million striker Joelinton’s cool first-half finish brought no answer from a flat Tottenham.
The story before the first whistle was obvious: the Toon would sit deep and Spurs would be tasked with breaking them down… with no help from Christian Eriksen, who started on the bench.
Joelinton opened his Magpies account in fine fashion, controlling a ball from Christian Atsu before calmly slotting home past Hugo Lloris inside the box. That goal only reaffirmed Newcastle’s tactic to sit deep and defend, with three points now the prize.
They did that terrifically in the second half, with the ball usually in front of them in the second half as Tottenham went from left to right in search of a way through. The few opportunities they did make were not converted, leaving the half-naked Geordies jumping for joy in north London as Mike Dean called time.
